Ansel Adams and the American West Results

Christie’s teamed up with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tucson (CCP) to auction off 34 lots by Ansel Adams – the centre’s founding member. Proceeds from the sale were committed to help establish an acquisition fund for the CCP.

The auction ran from 19th May to 4th June with estimates ranging from $3,000 to $60,000. All lots from the auction were sold with a combined sales total of $327,625.

The highest hammer price went to Adams’ Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada, from Lone Pine, California, 1944, which brought in $93,750 after an initial estimate of $40,000-$60,000. Mount Williamson, Sierra Nevada, from the Owens Valley, California, 1944 came in second with a hammer price of $20,000, and Pasture, Sonoma County, Northern California, 1951 brought in $17,500 – more than double its top estimate of $8,000.
