November’s Auctions

Though the usual calendar of photography auctions has come and gone there are a few mixed-media offerings to keep your photography auction appetite whetted including a photography-specific auction from Sotheby’s. Here is the current calender for November’s Auctions:

Though mixed-media auctions rarely offer up any outstanding photography sales, they can be an good gauge of the performance of up-coming artists, and an excellent place to pick up affordable work from future photography auction stars – this is particularly true of Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated auction, so if you’re looking to land a print before an artist becomes a household name, this is you’re best opportunity.

November

19th

Sotheby’s is holding an online auction on 19th November with a host of rising stars in its marquee: Contemporary Curated. Photography lots including work from contemporary artists such as Louise Lawler, Ed Ruscha and Olafur Eliasson, along with stalwarts like Hiroshi Sugimoto and Candida Hofer. 

21st

Sotheby’s is also hosting Contemporary Art Online, another opportunity to pick up some cheaper prints from contemporary photographers. Photography lots include work from Candida Hofer, Russel Young and Carlos Amora. Bidding closes for this auction on 21 November.

25th

Phillips will be hosting a mixed media auction in Hong Kong with several photography lots available from Andy Warhol. The 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design Day Sale will take place in Hong Kong on 25th November.

Sotheby’s Space Photography Online is the first of the photography-specific auctions and is being hosted online by Sotheby’s New York. This is the first of what looks to be an annual auction, celebrating photography in space. This year’s edition focuses on the Apollo 11 lunar landing during this 50th year anniversary.

26th

Running from the 25th to 26th Christie’s is holding a Post-War & Contemporary Art auction  in Amsterdam. The auction includes photographic lots from a wide range of artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Balthasar Burkhard, Wolfgang Tillmans, Vera Lutter and Andreas Gursky.
