Phillips Photographs Auction

Taking place on the same day at Sotheby’s Photographs auction Phillips is hosting its own with 59 lots available. 

The auction, which will occur in Phillips’s New York headquarters on 4th April, will bring together work by artists such as Helmut Newton, Robert Frank, Dorothea Lang, Sebastiao Salgado, Man Ray and many others. Estimates range from $2,500 to $800,000.

The highest estimate in this auction goes to a collection of four gelatin silver prints by Helmut Newton: Sie Kommen, Paris (Dressed and Naked), which has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000, next is a classic collage from Peter Beard: Tsavo East (early 60s), (as Brör Blixen knew it in the ’20’s + ’30’s), West of Daka Dima/ near the Tiva for The End of the Game/ Last Word from Paradise which uses a combination of silver print photographs with applied ink, paint, blood, stamps and chromogenic prints. The tomato for this piece is $150,000 to $250,000. Rounding out the top three is arguably Dorothea Lange’s most famous image Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California(featured), which has an estimate of $80,000 to $100,000.
