Photographs from the Ginny Williams Collection

Sotheby’s New York hosted an auction of Photographs from the Ginny Williams Collection, the final segment of a multi-auction collection taking place over the year featuring works by pioneering photographers such as Dorothea Lang, Bernice Abbott and Robert Doisneau. “Ginny was a dynamic force in the art market for more than three decades, passionately collecting more than 1,000 photographs by the time of her passing” explained Sotheby’s sales literature, “The Ginny Williams Collection display a breadth of vision and connoisseurship that is nothing short of remarkable.”

Photographs ranged from $300 to $30,000 in estimates, taking place online, and resulted in a sales total of $637,182 at the close of sale on 4th December.

The highest hammer price went to Piere Dubreuil’s Lyres Modernes, which outperformed its estimate of $15,000 to $25,000 by selling for $32,760. The second and third highest priced lots also outperformed their estimates with Robert Frank’s U.S. 24 Outside Detroit’ (Fremont Drive-in) taking in $27,720 after an estimate of $10,000-$15,000 and Horace Bristol’s Rescued Airmen Smoking in PBY (Sitting in Blister of ‘Dumbo’ Rescue Plane) reaching $27,720 after an initial estimate of $1,500-$2,500.
