Sotheby’s London Photographs Results; Spring 2019

Sotheby’s London hosted its first Photographs sale of the year with 119 lots on offer from artists such as Helmut Newton, Horst P. Horst, Peter Lindbergh, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Thomas Ruff and William Eggleston. 

Taking place on Thursday 16th May the auction was billed as:

‘Sotheby’s Photographs auction showcases some of the most celebrated names in photography from the 20th and 21st centuries. Coinciding with the international photography fair, Photo London, the auction offers the chance for established and first-time collectors to acquire works by some of the most renowned photographers.’

The auction brought together a tried and tested selection of prints known to sell at a steady price. There were no stand out offerings, but a collection of well-regarded photographs that, together, brought in a sales total of £966,875 ($1,233,542).

The most expensive lots were tied in joint first and joint second place. First place went to Peter Bear’s ‘Loliondo Lion Charge, For The End of The Game / Last Word From Paradise‘ and Peter Lindbergh’s ‘Estelle Lefebure, Karen Alexander, Rachel Williams, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patzt, Christy Burlington, Santa Monica, California, USA‘ both of which had estimates of £60,000 to £80,000 and both of which saw a sales price of £75,000 ($95,685).

In joint second place was auction darling Richard Avedon’s Dovima with Elephants, Evening Dress by Dior, Cirque D’Hiver, Paris (estimate of £30,000 to £50,000) and Constantin Brancusi’s ‘Bouquet’ (estimate of £40,000 to £60,000), both of which saw a hammer price of £50,000 ($63,790).
