A Life Among Artists Auction Results

A Life Among Artists: Contemporary Photographs from an Esteemed Private Collection ran from 22nd to 29th September at Sotheby’s New York bringing together work from some of the most celebrated contemporary artists including the world’s most successful female artist at auction; Cindy Sherman, as well as Wolfgang Tillmans, Stephen Shore, Andreas Gursky and marquee artist Marina Ambramovic, as well as more recent arrivals on the auction scene Hannah Starky, Todd Hido and Olafur Eliasson. There were nearly 60 lots available with estimates as low as $1,000 with several works up for sale with no reserve, this meant the auction was a great opportunity for buyers to get a great deal on promising artworks including a print by Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler which was picked up for as little as $378!

Unsurprisingly the lot with the highest hammer price was Cindy Sherman’s mural-sized Untitled 425 which was estimated to raise $200,000 to $300,000 and achieved a mid-range price of $252,000. The print was the fifth of six editions created in 2004.

Icestorm by Wolfgang Tillmans was the second most expensive lot, selling for $119,700 – outperforming it’s original estimate of $70,000-$100,000. Coming third was Roni Horn’s Doubt by Water (Why), a collection of twelve images created on six double-sized prints which were estimated to reach $60,000 to $90,000 and achieved $75,600. The auction realised a sales total just shy of a million at $993,888.
