Autumn Photography Auctions, 2021
It seems a long time ago since we last enjoyed a photography auction, after such a long summer break stretching out from 29th June to 22nd September. Christie’s Paris were the last to provide a medium-specific sale with the Photographies Auction achieving a sales total of €1,330,625. But now autumn is upon us and, thankfully, that means photography auctions are back on the cards with at least 9 auctions scheduled this season.
Sotheby’s kick off this quarter with an auction of contemporary works from a private collection. A Life Among Artists: Contemporary Photographs from an Esteemed Private Collection is a ‘tightly curated selection of nearly 60 photographs notably includes Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #425, the defining image from her 2003-04 Clown series, and Wolfgang Tillman’s Icestorm, a monumental ‘intervention’ piece from 2001.’ This billing suggests a well concentrated selection of photographs, probably with solid estimates. Could this be the auction that breaks photography records this year?
Sotheby’s continues the start of the season with two more September auctions, bringing together Classic and Contemporary photographs from 28th onwards. Christie’s and Phillips finally join the fray in October with Christie’s New York and Phillips New York’s final Photographs auctions of the year. Phillips are also slated to host an auction of photographs from a private collection in Reframing Beauty on 7th October. Finally, London’s auctions start in November with Sotheby’s Photographs followed by Phillips’ edition.
