Christie’s Photographies Auction Results; June 2021

Christie’s Paris hosted their annual Photographies auction at the end of June, bringing together over 100 lots of  20th and 21st century photographs from artists such as Thomas Ruff, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Nan Golden, Robert Mapplethorpe and Richard Prince. Lots were available from as little as €1,000. In total, the auction raised €1,330,625 with 72 lots sold.

The most expensive lot was 9-image typography from Bernd and Hills Becher whose Coal Bunkers, Frontal Views, 1968-1993 had an estimate of €60,000-€80,000 but exceeded expectations with a hammer price of €137,500. Irving Penn was next with his iconic Black and White Vogue Cover (Jean Patchett), New York, 1950 which sold for €118,750, followed by Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Catherine Howard, 1999 which had an original estimate of €25,000-€35,000 but out-performed the top estimate with a hammer price of €60,000.

That’s the last of the photography auctions for the rest of the summer, with the next sale scheduled for late September from Sotheby’s New York, who will be bringing two auctions to buyers of contemporary and classic photography, followed up in October by another Sotheby’s sale, this time in London.
